Brittle Kittle candy company honored for recycling work

TIGARD, OR - The Brittle Kittle, makers of unBRITTLE Soft Krunch confections, has recently been recognized by Washington County Cooperative Recycling for their business recycling efforts. The Brittle Kittle received Washington County's highest award, the Distinguished BRAG Award, for reducing waste, recycling and purchasing products made with recycled content. "The Business Recycling Awards Group (BRAG) is our opportunity to recognize local businesses for outstanding efforts in waste prevention, says Loreen Mills, Risk Manager for the City of Tigard.

Recycling is a business philosophy at The Brittle Kittle. Everyone gets involved. "It is my responsibility to protect and preserve the natural beauty that we enjoy here. I have been recycling for more than 20 years so naturally, I carried those practices into our candy business," says Johnnalee Friedman, co-owner and native Oregonian.

Notable efforts include the donation of plastic peanut butter buckets to a local organic farm for reuse, shipping confections with recycled Styrofoam donated by business park neighbors, and printing candy boxes on recycled content paper. "It's good for the environment - good for The Brittle Kittle" says Friedman.

The Brittle Kittle Accepted Into Prestigious National Association

Tigard, OR., July, 1999 -- The Brittle Kittle today announced its acceptance into the National Association for the Specialty Food Trade (NASFT). The NASFT is a not-for-profit business trade association established in 1952 to foster trade, commerce and interest in the specialty food industry. The NASFT also sponsors the prestigious Fancy Food Show each year in San Francisco and New York which attracts over 25,000 international attendees.

"Membership into this premier organization is coveted in our industry," said Johnnalee Friedman, Vice President of Marketing. "Becoming a member of such a distinguished group of professionals is a huge honor for us and establishes The Brittle Kittle as a serious player in the specialty foods industry. National and international retailers of specialty foods purchase with confidence from NASFT approved members."

The NASFT is an international organization composed of domestic and foreign manufacturers, importers, distributors, brokers and retailers of specialty foods and fine confections, cooking accessories and related publications. The NASFT currently has more than 2,050 member companies from throughout the U.S. and overseas.

Each unBRITTLE Soft Krunch variety - peanut, hazelnut, almond and pecan - is made with all-natural peanut butter. "Peanut butter gives the candy a delicious nutty taste without the 'teeth-shattering' hardness of traditional brittle which makes it truly unique; a real gourmet indulgence," said Friedman. Being headquartered in the heart of Oregon's Willamette Valley - world famous for its distinctive hazelnuts- The Brittle Kittle is able to source its fresh hazelnuts from local growers. This freshness is reflected in the highly successful Hazelnut unBRITTLE Soft Krunch which will be featured in NASFT's January, 2000 Fancy Food Show in San Francisco.
